The European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) is expected to be implemented in 2024. The original launch date was set for 2021, but was postponed several times due to the COVID-19 pandemic and other challenges.
ETIAS is a new travel authorization system that will be required for all visa-exempt travelers entering the European Union (EU) and Schengen Area. Travelers will need to apply for an ETIAS online before their trip, and it will be valid for three years or until the traveler's passport expires, whichever comes first.
The ETIAS application process is expected to be simple and straightforward, and the application fee is expected to be around €7. Travelers will need to provide basic information about themselves, their travel plans, and their criminal record. Once an ETIAS application is approved, travelers will be able to travel freely within the EU and Schengen Area for up to 90 days out of any 180-day period.
The ETIAS system is being implemented to strengthen border security and prevent illegal immigration. It will also help to identify and track potential threats to public safety.
